This special virtual session will focus on the latest thinking and collaborative action to shift the legal sector to a sustainability agenda and convert law firm champions into change-makers in tackling the climate crisis. For operations and administration professionals this is a critical issue, and this session will deliver a very valuable hour of usable know-how.
Featuring top leaders from various legal industry initiatives, this session will cover the following topics:
- The Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA), which began promoting sustainability for UK based law firms back in 2007. During that time firms have moved from measuring and managing their carbon emissions to committing to net zero. We will hear from LSA members about the latest evolution in their work and how they support firms of all shapes and sizes to embed sustainability.
- Legal Charter 1.5, launched in 2023 by eight founding large law firm signatories. This high ambition initiative aims to shift thinking and drive transformational change to mitigate the climate crisis. The charter contains eight principles which we will hear about.
- Carbon Calculator to measure firms’ carbon as the first step towards managing and then reducing it. How can law firms establish their headline carbon footprint to measure core emissions, such as water waste energy and travel, and set realistic and achievable targets for reduction?
- Jargon Busting: Do you know your IPCC from your ISSB? Your Scope 1 from your Scope 3? Net zero from carbon neutral? Though designed to expedite, technical terms can cause confusion and misunderstanding. We will illuminate some of the main terms throughout the session.
- Other legal industry initiatives such as the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance and The Law Society’s “legal voices for the future”
